Polygon started as a way to ease Ethereum's fees and congestion. Applications can keep a familiar development model while everyday transactions settle faster and cheaper. The native asset of that network changed from MATIC to POL.
It is more than a rename
MATIC long paid gas and staking on Polygon PoS. POL keeps that role and is designed so one asset can secure more than one chain in the Polygon ecosystem, instead of asking validators to lock a different coin on every chain. Since 2024, gas and staking on Polygon PoS are denominated in POL.
Some screens still say MATIC
Exchanges and wallets update on different schedules, so the same asset can still be labeled MATIC. If you trust the ticker alone, you can withdraw on a network the recipient is not watching. Read both the asset name and the network name on the withdrawal screen.
What the AggLayer connects
Polygon is linking chains through the AggLayer so liquidity can move between them. Payments and tokenized real-world assets care about fees, which is why they show up in this environment. More connections mean more uses. They do not mean a higher price.
What to check before staking
폴리젠 accepts POL deposits on Polygon PoS mainnet only. POL sent over Ethereum mainnet is a different transfer. It may never arrive at the deposit address, and recovery is difficult.
- Confirm the withdrawal network is Polygon PoS.
- Confirm the asset is labeled POL, not only the old name.
- Compare the start and end of the address with the application screen before you send.
